Fixed Training Academy

In partnership with some of the largest construction companies in the UK, we’ve designed a training course to help you learn new skills quickly so that you can qualify for some of the most in demand jobs in the UK.

The course consists of CITB-approved modules that will allow you to find work as a Chippie Labourer and IPAF Operator immediately afterwards.

You can earn up to £22 per hour as a Chippie Labourer and this will put you on a path towards becoming a Shuttering Carpenter where you can earn £27 per hour.

Course Duration

5 days (40 hours total), with practical assessments and theory exams.

Course Modules

  1. Basics of Formwork and Carpentry

    Teach trainees how to use basic equipment and tools.

    • How to correctly read a tape measure.
    • Understanding and importance of correct PPE.
    • Practical use of a hammer using nails, ply and timber.
    • Understanding engineers' marks.
    • Correct equipment to have on site, e.g. tool belt, hammer, chalk line, nails, etc.

  2. Introduction to Formwork (Panel Wall, Decking & Column Formwork)

    Familiarise trainees with formwork principles and systems.

    • Introduction to formwork types (e.g., wall, slab, decking, column formwork).
    • Overview of formwork systems and tools.
    • Basic formwork terminology and safety considerations.
    • Safe handling and assembly of formwork components.
    • Setting up wall, slab, and column formwork.
    • Techniques for dismantling and stacking formwork safely.
    Introduction to Formwork (Panel Wall, Decking & Column Formwork)

Course Outcomes

Upon completing the course, participants will:

  • Ability to use power tools safely (abrasive wheels).
  • Ability to cut timber and ply safely to size and assemble timber and ply formwork using a workbench.
  • Basic understanding of formwork systems and their application to a construction site.
  • Demonstrate safe, efficient assembly and dismantling of PERI and other formwork systems.
  • Operate MEWPs safely and understand emergency protocols.
  • Comply with working-at-height safety standards, with the ability to use PPE effectively.
  • Safely lifting, carrying and moving objects on site (Manual handling).
